Compare the American cover with the British cover. Which do you like best and why? Explain to your audience that the character telling the story is a large, adult male gorilla who lives at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall. The mall owner is Mack, who is having trouble making money with the Big Top Mall. Hi there As well as the 6 words stories my students also became Ivan and Stella and created diary entry blogs. This was probably the best activity we undertook and I was amazed at how well they were able to portray the feeling of each character they took on.

The One and Only Ivan is a children's novel written by K. Applegate and illustrated by Patricia Castelao. The book is about a silverback gorilla named Ivan who lived in a cage at a mall. The novel is written in first person from the point of view of Ivan, a gorilla. In it was named the winner of the Newbery Medal. Ivan, the gorilla, has lived in captivity at the Big Top Mall for 9, days by his own tally. He watches television, eats bananas and makes artwork that is sold by the owner.

Each day I read part of a book to our class. Our current read aloud book is The One and Only Ivan. This Newberry Medal winning book is a story told from the perspective of Ivan, a silverback gorilla, who has promised to protect Ruby, a baby elephant brought into captivity at a shopping mall. While the idea of reading a book told by a gorilla, does not sound universally appealing, it is a poingant book that draws young readers and more seasoned ones - reading it for the third time myself! It is similar in point of view to The Art of Racing in the Rain , by Garth Stein, which is told from the perspective of an aging dog. The more kid friendly version of the book is Racing in the Rain: My Life as a Dog and it is a great fourth grade and beyond story. As the year continues, I will share books we are reading in class.
