The book tells a Christmas-themed story, written in rhyme, that explains how Santa Claus knows who is naughty and nice. It describes elves visiting children from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve , after which they return to the North Pole until the next holiday season. The Elf on the Shelf comes in a keepsake box that features a hardbound picture book and a small scout elf. This story describes how Santa's "scout elves " hide in people's homes to watch over events. Once everyone goes to bed, the scout elf flies back to the North Pole to report to Santa the activities, good and bad, that have taken place throughout the day. Before the family wakes up each morning, the scout elf flies back from the North Pole and hides.

This is by far my favorite Christmas book in the whole entire world. The pictures by themselves could captivate me for hours. And they have, since I was little.

The German publisher Prestel has been making beautiful books for elves, I mean children, of my age and younger, for a long time. I also love the one that follows The Blue Hippo on its adventures through great images from Egyptian art. The little hippo which inspired this book is a statuette, a really small statue that lives in a big museum in Paris called The Louvre.

Christmas elves are often depicted as green or red clad with large, pointy ears and pointy hats. Santa's elves are often said to make the toys in Santa's workshop and take care of his reindeer , among other tasks.
