A Cargo hold is an enclosed structure in a ship whose main purpose is to store cargoes in the ship. A ballast tank is a compartment within a boat or ship that holds water. A vessel may have a single ballast tank near its center or multiple ballast tanks typically on either side. A large vessel typically will have several ballast tanks including double bottom tanks, wing tanks as well as forepeak and aftpeak tanks. Adding ballast to a vessel lowers its center of gravity, and increases the draft of the vessel.

For each cargo the stowage and loading principles are described as well as the securing of these cargoes which includes all necessary calculations. Answering the question will be difficult because cargo is only a name for different kinds of products which will be transported from one point of the earth to another. This can be done by car, aircraft, truck, or ship. The most useful kind of transportation and also the most efficient kind of transportation is the ship. A ship can carry, compared to a truck or railway, much more different products and also more masses. These goods will be transported generally for commercial gain. There are also some special cargoes which are partly belonging to the kinds of cargoes mentioned above, like dangerous goods which can be either dry cargo, refrigerated cargo or liquid cargo.

The correct securing and stowage of the cargo transported on board ships is of the critical importance for the safety of the vessel and the crew at sea. Wrong stowage or securing of the cargo has already resulted in so many casualties, causing numerous injuries and deaths - and some of them happened not at sea but also ashore, at the terminals, in the course of the loading and discharge operations. In the attempt to reduce the number and significance of hazards and problems that arise from the improper securing and storage of the cargoes on vessels, the IMO has released the Guidelines that may be either in the form of Assembly resolutions, or in the form of circulars adopted by MSC We recommend you to have a look into this compact but quite informative and useful booklet released by the specialists of the world respected OCIMF organization. This document is intended to provide some information to be used by the people involved in marine transportation of the flammable oil cargo. In the pages of this booklet they will find some valuable guidance related to the use of the inert gases - these guidelines are applicable to the tankers of any size.
