The first stories, which included folktales and epics, were not exclusively for children. However, they did utilize similar devices and themes, including repetition, rhyme, and fantasy. When the stories were first published in Liwayway , a prominent Tagalog magazine, they were categorized under the pop literature genre. Nobody would have guessed that the genre would, decades later, play a role in political education in the Marcos era. It was not until the eighties rolled around that the genre truly became a part of the literature circles in the Philippines. Even the masters wrote for children. Gilda Cordero-Fernando published four shorts in the collection Bad Kings.
