However, they did utilize similar devices and themes, including repetition, rhyme, and fantasy. When the stories were first published in Liwayway , a prominent Tagalog magazine, they were categorized under the pop literature genre. Nobody would have guessed that the genre would, decades later, play a role in political education in the Marcos era. It was not until the eighties rolled around that the genre truly became a part of the literature circles in the Philippines. Even the masters wrote for children. Gilda Cordero-Fernando published four shorts in the collection Bad Kings.
