Merchant & Mills Sewing Book
The company was formed in to elevate sewing to its proper place in the creative world, respecting the craftsmanship it entails. They produce a range of card patterns and really useful kits and in profound contrast to the pretty, flowery image of the average haberdasher, they present superb and unusual sewing of notions in stark, utilitarian packaging. Carolyn has a degree in fashion and has lived and worked in Italy and New York. She spent several years in Interior Design. Roderick is an established photographer and writer with works in the National Portrait Gallery. Part I introduces tools, techniques, our philosophy and working methods so you're completely prepared for the fifteen fabulous projects in part 2. We guide you through the construction of an apron, bags, soft furnishings and even things to wear.
In the last 5 years they have worked hard to built a strong reputation among makers, both at their store in Rye and online. All packaged in an utilitarian brand that I love. They assume you the maker have a foundation and can start straight away. The workbook wants the sewist to move beyond simplicity and dare some new skills. Each pattern has clear layplans, fabric quantity, finished measurements and illustrated instructions. Curlew is a bias cut dress with a scooped neckline, skinny sleeves and curved back waist seam.
