It's Metafilter's 20th anniversary! To celebrate, scan some cats or help fund Mefi! Did Nietzsche actually say this? What work is it from? I've seen this quote attributed to him all over the place. Google gets me a whole bunch of people quoting it, but even a Google Books search doesn't turn up any actually Nietzsche books.

My Bestselling Book

Y ou may or may not be familiar with the below quotation, often attributed to Nietzsche. It bounds across the internet in meme form, usually laid over images of silhouetted people dancing at sunset With a bit of context and some deeper reading, however, the quotation points to an important and profoundly influential approach to thinking about the world — and our place within it. T he very form of quotations — the apostrophes clothing the words before that combined hammer-blow of surname and full stop — fixes our attention, arouses our curiosity. Listen up brain, our eyes signal, this statement is followed by a mysterious, virtually unpronounceable surname, and therefore taps into an esoteric realm of knowledge and meaning that we must pay attention to. Apparently Nietzsche's moustache paved the way for the modern shoe brush. Nietzsche wrestled not with obscure inaccessible esoteric realms.
